Duat Residents: Semi-Divine and Other Beings

World-building notes on the beings and creatures that reside in DEITIES Project. This section focuses on the various semi-divine beings that inhabit the areas of Duat.

After passing their final judgement, mortal souls earn their opportunity to live among the deities, adopting new abilities and a more direct means of interacting with their divine counterparts. Even the separate aspects of the soul and other semi-divine figures find their niche within the underworld.

INTRODUCTION & COMMENTARY

Within the world of DEITIES, living mortals have very indirect means of interacting with gods and other divine creatures. However, the souls of deceased mortals are able to journey through the homeland of the gods to begin their afterlife. After overcoming a variety of trials within Duat, and passing their final judgement in the Hall of Ma’at, these mortal souls earn their opportunity to live among the deities, adopting new abilities and a more direct means of interacting with their divine counterparts. Even the separate aspects of the soul and other semi-divine figures find their niche within the underworld.

COLLECTION OF THE SEMI-DIVINE

Below is a short list of some of the semi-divine residents that appear in DEITIES verse. The following information is by no means exhaustive, and details and visual designs for each being may be expanded and adjusted as the project continues to develop.

EXALTED SOULS (“AKHU”)

The deceased souls of mortals who have passed their judgement in Duat — and have had all their aspects of their soul reunited together — become exalted, semi-divine spirits known as Akhu (singular: Akh).

APPEARANCE

An Akh will often appear in human-like form (similar to the modern idea of a ghost), but display some notable differences from both living mortals and the ka aspect of the soul. Akhu possess star-like, celestial patterns on various areas of their skin, which can glow and fade at will. They can also appear as an ibis or baboon (see below).

ABILITIES

Akhu gain abilities that are similar to those of deities, including the ability to freely cast magic, project their different aspects of the soul, and travel between realms. They also gain the ability to transform themselves into the forms of an ibis and baboon.

ROLES

Akhu are considered semi-divine, and are granted the opportunity to live among deities, as well as revisit their residences in the overworld as spirits. Many resume their leisure and livelihoods during their afterlife, sometimes aided by Shabti or other divine beings, and some Akhu choose to help assist other deities in regulating different parts of the mortal and divine world.

ANIMAL SOULS

Mortal animals do not face the same trials and journey through Duat as humans, but many are considered sacred, and individuals can earn their place to live among the divine following their death. Some animal souls are from those who were raised within the temples of different gods, or offered for different rituals, while other souls are from animals who had lived as beloved companions of their human masters, and were likewise buried with ceremony.

APPEARANCE

The souls of animals visually appear similar to their mortal counterparts, but take on more of the spirit-like features of Akhu and other aspects of the soul. Like the Akhu, animal souls possess star-like patterns on their skin and coats, that can glow and fade at will.

ABILITIES

Animal souls possess enhanced perceptions, similar to deities, as well as more heightened sentience and awareness than their mortal counterparts. They also gain the ability to travel between realms.

ROLES

Animals souls are given access to inhabit Duat in the same way as Akhu and other divine creatures, but are often tasked to act as sacred messengers to their associated deities. Some animal souls may also resume their role as mounts or companions to their human masters in the afterlife.

SHABTI

Shabti are magically-animated figurines who act as the semi-divine laborers and servants of Duat, assisting both deities and mortals in the afterlife.

APPEARANCE

Shabti are designed as doll-like, mummiform figurines from any variety of materials (including clay, stone, wax, and wood). They have inscriptions placed upon their bodies that modify their ability to do certain tasks, and to respond to their mortal or divine masters.

Shabti appear in one of two active forms: that of a small, animated doll who can assist with quick or minor tasks; or of a life-sized, human-like appearance to assist with large or more precise tasks.

ABILITIES

Shabti are meticulous workers who feel a natural obligation to work, serve, and assist others. They are observant and have a tendency to quickly learn new skills and habits by watching others, as well as retain and recall what they’ve learned. Shabti also have a level of sapience much like humans, and can speak with other beings and understand instructions.

Shabti cannot freely control magic on their own, but can be granted the ability to use small instances of magic by their creators or masters. Shabti can be transformed between their two active forms, and when they are not working, they can return to their doll-like appearance to “idle” and rest until called upon once more.

ROLES

Shabti are created with the purpose of serving other beings, and are often modified to help with a variety of tasks and labors. They help provide efficiency and convenience to their masters, and sometimes serve as an added form of companionship.

SETSPAWN

Setspawn are a physical manifestation of Set’s control over Chaos energy, and appear in his likeness – a diminutive form of it, but a likeness nonetheless (more information and details on The Setspawn page).

APPEARANCE

Setspawn appear to resemble diminutive Sha animals that are mouse-like in appearance and in size, with disproportionately large ears, forearms, and eyes. The majority of Setspawn share a similar shade of red as Set’s animal form, but there are a few that are other variants of colors — such as other shades of red, and very rarely as black or white.

ABILITIES

Setspawn are an extension of Set’s awareness — if a Setspawn happens to hear, see, or otherwise perceive a piece of key information, it can relay them as memories when it returns directly back to Set.

Setspawn are also capable of learning from their environment and experiencing simple emotions, and they may mimic behaviors for their own amusement. Neither food or sleep are vital for Setspawn, as the chaos energy that created them is enough to sustain their form. But Setspawn can get very sluggish without food or sleep, so both needs are “optional but optimal.”

ROLES

Setspawn serve as Set’s agents and messengers, and assist in gathering and returning information to him. The spawn maintain their own autonomy to wander around and gather information of interest, and often interact with their environment and cause any chaos as they see fit

During Set’s reign, the Setspawn were more numerous, helping to monitor events around Duat and relay any key info or concerns to Set. But after the results of the Contendings, only a handful of Setspawn remain at the start of the main story.
